Since one of the only benefits to being gay is not having to go to war, Jeff Key’s friends were stunned when he announced that he had joined the Marine Corps. But he was raised in a town where love of country came directly after love of God (since loyalty to country is demanded in the Bible), and he knew in his heart that his homosexuality had negated neither. Unfortunately, not everyone was of the same opinion. Jeff’s father and preacher truly believed that God no longer loved him. They prayed to their all-merciful God, not that HE would accept Jeff, but that Jeff would change and learn to love women, the same prayer that Jeff himself had sent up tot the Lord so many times.
But God wouldn't change poor Jeff. Maybe God didn't feel that Jeff was worth changing. Or maybe HE felt that Jeff didn't need to be changed, for Jeff had a higher purpose - to bring the hypocrisy of the church and the United States Armed Forces to the forefront and change things. Maybe God didn't believe that Jeff should have to worry about his rack mates finding out about his sexual preference and bashing his head in during the night.
Maybe God wants us to know that you don’t have to be Republican to love your country and you don’t have to be Baptist to love God. Maybe, just maybe, God Blesses Everyone. No Exceptions. And the people who believe THAT will be the ones who inherit the Kingdom of Heaven.

Great post UWL. As a gay vet, I know what this hypocrisy and discrimination feels like first hand. I've never had much faith in any church, but I've seen what hate masquerading as faith looks like too. Discrimination, hate crimes, teen-suicide often lead back to one premiss ~ that one kind of person is inherently better than another.
You are a better man than many will ever be. Serving a country that mostly hates you simply because of who you love all the while hiding your true identity is the most selfless of gestures. Thank you for your service to a country wholly unworthy of your loyalty.
I just watched a doc.(on free speech TV) on prison & sex. They interviewed some very tough men (gang bangers). Most said they would of never have looked at a man in a sexual way "but it took PRISON to turn them out" So if prisons are turning men gay maybe they should ban prisons!
God loves everyone.
And so do I.
About God... I think she has as little tolerance for these Pharisees and Sadducees as her son did with tho ones he rebuked 2,000 years ago.

Your first sentence provoked a question in my pre-cafeinated mind this morning:
Does the U.S. military have a bigger problem with gay men serving than gay women serving? If so, why?

Don't delete te comment, it's a good question. My aunt served up to the rank of General as a gay woman in the Air Force. There HAD to be people who knew she was gay. NO ONE stays in the service THAT long and is able to hide their lives. They wanted her to stay in, but she finally got out so that she could live in peace with her partner of over 30 years.
