Gr8

I'm really surprised that more people haven't been writing about this, though I guess at this point the G8 Summit is an exercise in futility, at least where the US is concerned. These world leaders get together, and President Bush, with all of the intelligence of an eight year-old says, "I don't have to do what you say. Nanny, nanny, boo-boo." And the other world leaders do... NOTHING. No one, not even Merkle will put him in his place, nor will they explain to him that the US is not the only country in the world, nor is it the one with the largest population. At some point its citizens, or more likely the citizens of the world, are going to call the government on its bullshit, and THAT will NOT be pretty.

It's no doubt a sad fact but this is one of the most productive G8 events and also I doubt that Bush will ever be called to task by the drones that make up the majority of his population.

Too busy living the American dream...

Americans were distracted by what the majority seem to consider more important that the world: Paris Hilton. :-(

I'm reasonably sure that the defection of the U.S. allowed the European nations to talk tough about hard choices, while actually avoiding them because bad ol' America wont play. Feh!

Do what's right now, and in the long term, it'll be better for the coutry as a whole, though it may be hard on individual politicians (I'm in favor of drastic cuts of CO2, in case that didnt sound right)(or to the Right).

Good point Dave, Bush certainly enables the Europeans to talk tough but do so safe in the knowledge follow through is unlikely.

Good stuff.

@ UL: what??

Daniel,
I think how productive it was remains to be seen. I don't think a majority of Americans know what the G8 is, and oif they don't they wouldn't have learned by watching the news this week.

Tomcat,
With all the news about that TB patient we've been wondering what the media has been covering up.

Dave,
So what if the people aren't happy about the cuts? We're not the only ones who have to live on this planet.

ul,
That's a shame. I love my country.

UL: America is great. But lately, American policies suck.

There's a difference.

What's the saying? Hate the sin, love the sinner? Same deal. Hate the policy, love the country.

Uwl, what is it that you love about America?

United We Lay said...

No Pundit,
Do I really need a reason? It is the place of my origin, and because of that it will always be special to me. I love the concept of America. The implimentation han't been going as well. I love the landscape. I love the library system. I love that minority groups are legally protected somewhat. Now that I think about it, it's pretty hard to come up withthings that I love about this country that I wouldn't find in Canada, the Netherlands, the UK, Ireland, etc...

uwl, your statement sounds a bunch like someone discussing the love in a bad marriage.

Well, that's probably a good analogy. I feel wronged by America. I feel betrayed. This is not the America my family worked so hard to build and maintain. This is not the America some of my relatives left Ireland for. This is an America they would be ashamed of, and that makes me sad.

I don't wish to dismiss your feelings, but the America you envisioned as idyllic did not exist. In fact, some things were much worse - "real" poverty was higher, years of education were fewer, children worked earlier, death rates were higher in children and elderly were not so elderly. Animals were viewed differently, polution was ignored, DNA could not clear the many who were in prison wrongly, children were to be seen and not heard, women did not have anything close to equal rights or opportunities, civil rights were non-existent for some minorities, fewer people owned their own homes and worked in deplorable conditions, domestic violence and child abuse was all but ignored by police, etc, etc, etc.

My family came here from Scotland and Norway. This was a country they helped to build and those still living will recall and long for the simplicity of their past, but are honest in recognizing that this country has improved in many ways that are significantly more fair to all of it's citizens.

America is the best nation in all the world.

UL,
You seem to be contradicting yourself, though that's nothing new.
