Global Chaos

I haven't discussed Global Warming at all, but I think it's relevant given the recent surge in the intensity of violent storms. We had quite a hurricane season last year down here in Florida, and this year's season is only half over. On Bill Maher last night, a science professor from Stanford University mentioned that the intensity of hurricane Katrina was due to Global Warming as the temperature of the Gulf of Mexico was two degrees higher than it normally would be at this time of year. Though I agree that the "A Day After Tomorrow" scenario is probably impossible, there are a lot of other scenarios we're not looking at because, as the President says, "The jury's still out on Global Warming." What kinds of things do you see happening as Global Warming continues? Do you think we should have signed the Kyoto Treaty? What do you think are the economic benefits of ignoring Global Warming like we've been doing, and what will be the downfalls of such action?

Global chaos is a valid inquiry, and something that we should not ignore. All of these issues feed into our abiiity to prepare ourselves and respond to nature and its consequences.

I think there's no doubt that there's global warming. But, we can't really quantify the extent of it, nor can we predict the impact it will have. We also can't be completely certain that it's due to human causes (i.e. pollution) though the chance is good that it is.

Although we would all feel much better if there was really any possibility of human intervention, the sad truth is that we are only human. We cannot stop hurricanes and I don't believe anyone has any idea how to impact global warming, either. I do think we should be more environmentally responsible, regardless.

Global Warming: I think it's happening. What to do? As Saur says, what CAN we do? But I think we could start trying to do SOMEthing even if it doesn't make any difference. After all, you never know till you try.

I'm pretty pissed off at Bush for encouraging everyone to go about their plans for this weekend. Sure, get out in your power boats! Gas up your Hummers! Why not? It's only gasoline.

Give me a good reason why the US hasn't signed the Kyoto agreement and I'll show you profit being put before environment.

One of the reasons neocons don't believe in environmental issues is because they're too caught up in the Rapture. See, the end is nigh - the Bible says God gave us all the world to use as we see fit and to them the second coming is coming soon. So why conserve? And hurricane's aren't caused by global warming. It's Jesus using the spin cycle ;-)

#1 the hurricane activity is a 30 to 50 year cycle the last heaviest cycle was in the 30s, 40, and 50s. even if you subscribe to globall warming even the most rabid of that community put the manmade gasses of it at 10% the range primarily is between 5%-10% one of the biggist producers of green house gas are volcanoes. Does anyone know how to stop one?

There is also a large part of the science community that is starting to place the theory that a large part of our weather conditions are tied to solar activity. All in all the science of planetary climatolagy has not been worked out yet to a predictable model that can be used to make adjustments or even where to begin.

Now does that mean that we should not be doing things to lessen polution of course not.

Dan... Kyoto would hurt us a lot more economicly than it would help the environment.. it has to many exceptions in it for other countries in the world. And the EU just released a report that even implementing the changes that they have sworn to undertake they will not meet thier emmision standards as set forth in the treaty. Besides profit is a good thing.

Profit is never a good thing. It leaves you wanting more.

So terribly disappointed...

We never do anything that isn't for profit, so why do any of you belive we went into Iraq to liberate the people? It's all bullshit.

Dan

Did you get a paycheck? That is your profit from your labour. If not for profit we would not eat. Even in a socialist utopia the profit of the group is what feeds them. Man can not live without profit.

City,
That's true, but we can decide what we profit from.

Kyoto would be a bad idea. Trying to stick to it would cripple us economicly, and not accomplish a whole lot anyway. Unless we are willing to give up a technological society greenhouse gasses are going to be a given.
And I am not willing to go back alive permanently in a non technologial world. I like electricy, plumbing, medicine, transportaion, computers, and food I don't have to grow myself.
