In this article, 20 journalists (such as Dan Rather) describe the ways in which corporate media ownership prevented them from reporting important - and often troubling - stories. Rather than allowing these stories to air and letting the people decide their importance, they were stifled by corporate brass and the threat of pulled sponsorship. Some writers and journalists have even been fired.
Not all of these stories would be detrimental to the government, but they would have an impact on the profits of key government employees. Some expose things like the expensive and pointless war on drugs or the hormones put into our milk supply, but others talk about the detaining of prisoners in Guantanamo Bay and voter fraud in the 2000 election. Most important is the reason why all this censorship is possible - the consolidation of the country's major news outlets.
Let's not forget that in a fascist government the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives, sometimes under the guise of consumerism. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.
Especially this weekend, but as always, take a look at these faces:
3,435 US Soldiers killed in Iraq
25,378 US Soldiers wounded in Iraq

The Republican mania for deregulation of everything is part of the reason for the mess we're in today. They talk incessantly about "market forces" and choice, but what they dont mention is that these two things lose most of their teeth when one of your choices isnt not to purchase anything. Gasoline, insurance, utilities, everything. A handful of choices is not a free market. Texas deregulated electricity and got a doubling of electric prices for its trouble, and Republicans dont seem to see any problem with that (recent electric "regulatory" legislation here was more concerned with the loss of profit from sale of our Electric Giant than the cost of electricity to its customers). In order for competition to lower prices, there must be a very real possibility that providers will lose money. The spectre of lower profits, but profits nonetheless doesnt do anyone any good except the Owner class.
An example: in my hometown, most of the gas stations are controlled by one company. The rest of them (Wal-mart and another) offer a price one cent lower. And why should they go any lower? They get the business anyway.
Noam Chomsky eluded to this problem nearly 30 years ago in
"The Washington Connection and Third World Fascism (The Political Economy of Human Rights - Volume I)" and continues to deride in his current books as well.
It also reminded me of this Nation article (now 5 years old). The chart probably changed since then, but the concept is the same... Just look how much of our information is controlled by so few.
And of course from a line from Jello Biafra's re-write of the Pledge of Allegiance:
"One Nation of sedated tabloid robots who actually believe what they see on tv, even on MTV, but when ask about it say “I don’t care.”
Media control is an issue high on my list of social problems....
This is why I think it is funny when people complain about "the liberal media". What liberal media? How about Fox start to complain about the "Corporate Whore Media"?
Oh yea, that would mean them. Never mind! Carry on! Nothing to see here!
By the way, did I mention that the liberal media is trying to push a secular progressive / homosexual agenda on us all?
By the time the average Joe (a product of public schools allowed to run down for some reason I just can not figure out - Republicans LOVE to cut education spending and push private schools as a solution to everything) figures this out, we will all be goose stepping down the street wearing snazzy arm bands and jack boots.
Wow, this is terrible.
United,
The liberal media has done a great deal to destroy this country.
I don't think it's fair to put all the blame on the blacks and Hispanics.
With very few exceptions (Keith Olbermann) the ultra-conservative MSM have morphed news from information into infotainment and infoganda.
You have got to see this documentary on the subject at hand.
Fear and Favor in the Newsroom
In FEAR AND FAVOR IN THE NEWSROOM, journalists, including four Pulitzer Prize winners, from The New York Times, NBC, PBS and other respected news organizations reveal how they have been censored, squelched or fired for aggressively reporting on the wealthy and the powerful. The one-hour program also presents senior news executives, including the former Vice Chairman of The New York Times and the President of NBC News, who defend the work of their news organizations.
Also, Manufacturing Consent The docuemntary based in part on Noam Chomsky's ground breaking book.
The film presents and illustrates Chomsky's and Herman's propaganda model, the thesis that corporate media, as profit-driven institutions, tend to serve and further the agendas of the interests of dominant, elite groups in the society. A centerpiece of the film is a long examination into the history of The New York Times's coverage of Indonesia's invasion and occupation of East Timor, which Chomsky claims exemplifies the media's unwillingness to criticize an ally.
Cranky,
We actually just taped Manufactuing Consent and I will be watching it tonight or tomorrow.
Captain conehead,
Please clarify your statements. I don't think I understand you.
Re: Captain Conehead - I think you've found yourself a troll.
Did you get a load of Jurassic Pork's expose of Fox pushing blatant political lies on the news a while back ? Welcome to Pottersville can be a must-see for scathing commentary. Come 'round and check out my collection of web finds some time.
Someone has taken Saur's pic and made Captain Conehead from it.
For now, I find it funny but we'll see how it goes...
Lately they don't need to cover up anything, because they never reported it.
For years we have been complaining about the lack of press in this war, about how they have stood to the side, refused to show things that are relevant, even necessary for a public to see during war time. Today a person from AAA was talking about gas prices on the local news. she said, and I quote, "We have crisis prices at a time when there is no crisis. there are no wars, no hurricanes, etc..." Seriously? No wars??? I think THIS is the problem with our country right now. No one knows there's a fucking WAR ON!
