Use Less Oil

Why is it that no one can seem to use this phrase? Whenever anyone is interviewed about the current crisis in the Middle East or the reduced number of barrels from Alaska, their response is that Americans will have to import more oil from overseas, causing a rise in gas prices. They never say, "Americans will have to use less oil". Obviously no one but Al Gore wants to put a kink in our consumer chain (but who listens to him anyway?), and NO ONE wants to see the oil companies make less money, but how hard is it to say, "Take a walk. Take the bus or train. Build green. Cut down on your use of plastics. Recycle. Put on a sweater. Use cloth diapers. STOP DRIVING SUV's!!!"

They won't say these things because Americans don't want to hear that in order for us to do better individually, we need to make sacrifices as a nation. Americans aren't really good at that word: sacrifice. They're much better at dealing with or repressing the guilt that comes with not sacrificing, if it comes at all. Isn't it our patriotic duty to use less oil, especially when we're at war with one of the major producers of it, and every country that harbors terrorists gets most of their money from oil? This is not a game, people, and it is certainly not a dress rehearsal. THE WORLD IS NOT ENDING. We can reverse the damage we've done and do better in the future.

It's because energy conservation has become identified as politically left and if it is left the wingnuts and dittoheads won't go along with it. No matter how good it is for the country. It is also because our country is run buy people accepting money from big oil companies. Just talking about burning less oil is deemed Un-American.

Didn't Dick Cheney say something to the effect of driving big SUVs and using gas at unecessary levels has become the American lifestyle and that we must fight to protect that? Didn't he say that we could afford higher energy prices by paying lower taxes? Less money for starving kids so fat people can drive fat cars.

Does anybody see a pattern here? An oil guy says consuming oil is the American Way.

I drove my gas guzzler truck to the dump today, 4 mile round trip. It is a necessary waste and the truck will sit until next sunday. Of course I get my gas at Chevron so my money goes to Venezuela as opposed to "big Oil" and Terrorists.

Driving a gas guzzler, like all waste, is a sin against man and earth. It is greedily taking more than you need. It is always wrong to take more than you need.

We have Wawa, their gas is domestic. Usually they're cheaper, sometimes they're not, but we try not to fuel up anywhere else.

I agree. I think any cause championed by the "left" is torn down by the right, no matter how good of an idea it is. I don't see much about the American lifestyle that is positive, which is one of the reasons we're considering Canada. We're also lookig at Ireland. The question is: will it be worth the things we have to give up? I think it might be. There is so much here I don't want my kids exposed to, and I don't want them to not have friends because everyone around them is different than we are. I wish there were a different way, but economically and socially, I think it might be better to go somewhere else. It breaks my heart, and I have done everythign I could to effect change, but in 8 years, it's only gotten worse. I don't see anythign positive ont he horizon, especially when Al Gore's movie only showed in certain theaters though it's something EVERYONE needs to see.

The "right" often paints itself as favoring "freedom" by opposing government regulations.

It does not oppose US regulations that treat SUVs over 6000lbs as farm vehicles, exempt from emissions rules, and gives big tax breaks for buying them. The tax break was reduced in 2004, but is still significant.

If the taxation of SUVs was like other vehicles (exceptions for "real" work uses, such as some farm and logging applications), economics would soon show they are a poor choice and people would shift away from them.

Actually Citgo is the Venezuelan gas company. Chevron is headquartered in California.
As gas gets more expensive less peopel will buy and drive the big vehicles. the market will rule.....
